Starting in January 2012, I have been writing a page a day in a moleskine daily diary. Each page averages 400 words or so, depending on how teeny tiny my handwriting decides to be that day. I have a prompt that I choose from a list and only that page to write the story, no more, no less.

I write every day in this journal, no matter what other projects I have on the burner. Some of these projects have started in here, others remind me how much better I need to get at careful crafting of stories.

Through the year I hope to get better at crafting short works of fiction, understanding the beauty of brevity and developing quick characterization. Maybe next year I’ll write 1000 words a day.
